Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational 2017

This year was Patrick Saunders' first time at the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational.

Laguna Beach, California, is a great place for a plein air event - no shortage of painting inspiration in this charming beach town.

Patrick started the event with a landscape at Treasure Island Park Beach.

Patrick did another beach scene with figures for the LPAPA's Quick Draw at Heisler Park, and it sold right off the easel.

Patrick painted this tree at Badlands Park in Laguna Niguel, California, one of his favorite pieces yet, thanks to our wonderful housing hosts, who took the time to show us their favorite places in the area. There's a trail near the tree that our hosts frequent - it's a beautiful walk along the cliffs high above the beach.

Our housing hosts have a handsome chocolate labrador retriever named Kobe, who was as charming and friendly as could be, so of course we had to photograph and paint him.

Everyone wants an ocean view in Laguna Beach, California. The houses terraced into the cliffs for the sake of the amazing views create some interesting patterns, inspiring Patrick to paint "Nyes Place."

Crystal Cove State Park is a very quiet and peaceful place early in the morning. The artists were able to spend a whole day painting this tranquil, historic place.

On the last day of the LPAPA invitational, Patrick & some of the other artists had the chance to do a portrait demonstration painting at the Tivoli Too. Patrick was quite happy with the results, and the painting later sold at Plein Air Texas.

  1. Good heavens, how many hours a day did you paint? Gorgeous work.

    1. Thank you Judy. I paint a few hours a day at each competition. Plein air painting so much over the last few years has made me a speedier painter. - Patrick
