Patrick Saunders Fine Arts 2015 Plein Air Painting - "Stones, Femme Osage" - Augusta, Missouri

For #TakeMeBackTuesday, here's another of my early plein air paintings, which I did at the Augusta Plein Air Festival back in 2015. So much has changed since then.

"Stones, Femme Osage" • Oil on Canvas • 12"x16" • Private Collection

At the time, I was afraid to paint any larger than 12"x16," and a painting like this was fairly ambitious for me. I remember also being nervous about the subject matter. Would anyone like a painting of a graveyard?

I chose to paint it anyway, as I was drawn to the strong design of the headstones and their shadows. This painting went on to win Best of Show, Artist's Choice and First Place, Oil Painting, at the event.
That was a huge turning point for me, as I realized that I should always paint subjects that interest me personally, even if they make me nervous. - Patrick Saunders
