Patrick Saunders Fine Arts - First Plein Air Painting, Kansas City, Missouri

Seven years ago this week, I created my first ever "plein air" painting. Not my best work, but everyone has to start somewhere. Kimberly even filmed the entire experience:

I never imagined that painting outdoors would become such an integral part of our lives and forever change my approach to painting. - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts - "Gerbera Study" - Plein Air Floral Art

I've always found gerbera daisies to be my nemesis. Maybe it's the struggle to get past their iconic sunburst shape and see them as they really are, or maybe it's the battle to avoid painting all of the individual petals.

In this study, I challenged myself even further by painting a light flower on a light background. - Patrick Saunders

The Sweet Potato - First Campsite

#TakeMeBackTuesday to a great 2017 memory of our first campsite with our new Airstream 25FB Flying Cloud, the 'Sweet Potato.'

We can't wait to really get moving again. Airstreams aren't meant to sit still.

Fort Funston Beach - San Francisco, California

This was our almost daily view when we lived in San Franciso.

We took our dogs every morning to the Fort Funston beach dog park. They got great exercise, and we got to enjoy this beautiful place.

We hope the skies there clear soon.

Throwback Thursday - Sonoma Plein Air Festival

For #ThrowBackThursday, here is a piece I painted during the 2015 Sonoma Plein Air Art Festival.

If you've ever been to the lighthouse at Point Reyes National Seashore, then you know how far it is from everything. It's way out there. No cell reception. Once you hit the parking lot, you've still got a mile long hike, and much of that is stairs. As I made the hike, dense fog rolled in obscuring everything. The wind can be brutal. I backed myself into a nice corner and lashed my easel to a metal railing. Just then, the sun broke through the clouds. - Patrick Saunders
