Patrick Saunders Fine Arts December 2020 Art Newsletter - The Right Reds

Happy New Year's Eve to all!

Even though I didn't travel much in 2020, I was often distracted from painting because it's been such a turbulent year. My new year's resolution is to tune out the noise and re-focus on my art. I'm going to end the year by sharing some of my thoughts on color.

Red is one of the most difficult colors to work with in painting. If you struggle to get just the right reds in your work, there are steps you can take to simplify the mixing process.

Sign up at the link below for my latest newsletter to learn more about how to mix a range of reds. - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Floral Demonstration Painting - 2013 KCAI Holiday Gala - Kansas City, Missouri

For #ThrowBackThursday, here is a ghost of Christmas past.

In 2013, I painted a poinsettia as a benefit for the Kansas City Art Institute at their holiday gala. I was required to wear a tuxedo for the event.

Somehow, the tuxedo survived without any paint on it! - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Plein Air Painting "President Tyler's Eternal View" - Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia

On Tuesday, I shared a painting of a cemetery that was one of my early plein air paintings. Three years and hundreds of paintings later, I painted another cemetery. This time it was Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

Once again I was drawn more to the design of the scene. In this case is it was the shadows cast by the wrought iron fence and the light breaking from the trees.

This one was a lot more complicated than the first, as I couldn't rely on the simplified shapes of the headstones which were all lost in the larger shadow pattern. - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts 2015 Plein Air Painting - "Stones, Femme Osage" - Augusta, Missouri

For #TakeMeBackTuesday, here's another of my early plein air paintings, which I did at the Augusta Plein Air Festival back in 2015. So much has changed since then.

"Stones, Femme Osage" • Oil on Canvas • 12"x16" • Private Collection

At the time, I was afraid to paint any larger than 12"x16," and a painting like this was fairly ambitious for me. I remember also being nervous about the subject matter. Would anyone like a painting of a graveyard?

I chose to paint it anyway, as I was drawn to the strong design of the headstones and their shadows. This painting went on to win Best of Show, Artist's Choice and First Place, Oil Painting, at the event.

That was a huge turning point for me, as I realized that I should always paint subjects that interest me personally, even if they make me nervous. - Patrick Saunders

Throwback Thursday - 2018 Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival

For #ThrowbackThursday, here's a painting Patrick Saunders created in Hobe Sound, Florida. This piece won 2nd Place at the Lighthouse ArtCenter's 2018 Plein Air Festival.

SOLD - Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Floral Painting - "Trumpets" - Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Happy to be shipping this painting off to a new collector this week.

We came across these beautiful lilies at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, one of our favorite gardens in the nation. It was our refuge when living in New York - a tranquil park in the midst of a bustling metropolis.

It's easy to spend the entire day there. We're looking forward to visiting again in 2021. - Patrick Saunders

For #ThrowbackThursday, here's one of my earliest plein air paintings, which I did at the Augusta Plein Air Festival back in 2015, the first plein air event outside of Kansas City, Missouri that I had ever participated in at that point.

I was pleased to learn yesterday that this painting was purchased by a new collector at Gallery Augusta this week. - Patrick Saunders

A "loose" painting looks effortless, but it's often far more difficult to achieve than a photo realistic painting, and it can add energy and excitement to your work that takes it beyond a simple rendering.

Take Me Back Tuesday - A Favorite Campsite In Tennessee

Floral Art - "Yellow Daisy Study"

Here's a little experiment in simplification with some yellow daisies that I painted from life last week.

Kimberly bought these because she loves daisies. They're such cheerful flowers, they do really brighten things up, so of course I had to paint them. This piece is a lot looser than I would normally paint, but it is really all about color. - Patrick Saunders

Throwback Thursday - "Castle Rogue's Manor" Plein Air Painting - Eureka Springs, Arkansas

It's not every day that you get the opportunity to paint a castle in the woods.

This piece was created on a cold morning during the Eureka Springs School of the Arts 2017 Plein Air Festival.

Castle Rogue's Manor was built in Beaver, Arkansas in 1985, overlooking the White River. When visiting, it's easy to feel like you've been transported to somewhere other than north western Arkansas. - Patrick Saunders

#takemebacktuesday to June 2017, when we moved on from our Baked Potato, an Airstream Bambi, to the Sweet Potato, a 25FB Flying Cloud.

Bill Thomas Camper Sales in Saint Louis, Missouri is still the best Airstream dealership in the country as far as we're concerned, and we have visited almost all of them!

Throwback Thursday - Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Plein Air Painting - "Enter the Garden"

Before the pandemic, Kimberly and I would visit botanical gardens throughout the country on a regular basis. I really miss that experience. Here's hoping we'll be back at it soon.

Here is one of my favorite garden paintings from Maymont in Richmond, Virginia. It was a narrow path, and I remember having to move out of the way for numerous visitors as they passed. All of them were very gracious once they realized what I was up to. - Patrick Saunders

Throwback Thursday - "Awaiting the Sun, Fleming Beach" - 2018

The chill of winter is in the air, so for #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a plein air painting I did in 2018 for the Maui Arts League’s Plein Air Painting Invitational that makes me feel warmer just looking at it.

I arrived at Fleming Beach early on this particular morning, and decided to paint the lifeguard station because I liked the way it was nestled among the palm trees, and because it tells the story of what this beach is so prized for. A steady stream of surfers stopped by to chat as I painted.

One of the surfers told me he really liked my painting, and wanted to buy it, because this beach is his favorite place in the world to surf. I thanked him for his interest, and didn’t think anything more of it, but sure enough, the surfer showed up to the awards ceremony, and took this painting home with him. - Patrick Saunders

We're finally going to be back on the road again next spring for the 8th annual Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival!

The event itself will be virtual, but Patrick Saunders Fine Arts will be teaching an in person, outdoor painting workshop just before the festival starts.

"Mustang Sally's" - Plein Air Texas, 2016

I painted this on the first morning of Plein Air Texas in 2016. I remember it very well, as it was cold enough in Texas Hill Country that I needed to wear gloves.

The upside of the freezing weather was that it forced me to work faster, keeping everything as simple as possible. - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts - "Iris" Floral Painting

Reflecting back on some older plein air florals for #ThrowBackThursday, I came across this iris painted at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens in 2014.

I can distinctly remember not understanding the structure of the flower at all, which worked to my advantage. With such a confusing subject, it's easier to just paint shapes, values and colors. - Patrick Saunders
