Art Review - "La lettre de rupture" by Alfred Emile Stevens - Musรฉe d'Orsay, Paris, France

Today for #MuseumTourTuesday, I'd like to share a more obscure painting at the Musรฉe d'Orsay

This piece by Alfred ร‰mile Stevens was located in a room focused on art deco furniture, so it was very dimly lit and difficult to see, let alone photograph. We almost walked right past it, but I'm glad that we didn't, as it has a beautiful mood and subtlety.

Click through the photos for my thoughts.

Painting photos by Saunders Fine Arts.

"La lettre de rupture” (The Break Up Letter) • Alfred Stevens • 1867 • Oil on Canvas • 73x54cm
The title of the painting clearly sets the scene of a woman who has just read a break up letter from her lover, and so many interesting details in the painting support her emotions.

Notice the glimpse of a potted floral to the right, suggesting a larger room while she stands alone in the shadows of a privacy screen. These are emotions that one can only face alone. The letter is heavy in one hand, while the other clutches her abdomen. This is the exact moment that she comes to grasp the meaning of the letter.

Notice the compositional draw towards the letter. The strong movement of the dark in the middle of the privacy screen directs the eye towards the letter. The cool light blue of the letter contrasts with the dark warmth of the privacy screen. Both hands are more in focus than the head, leading the eyes downward.

"La lettre de rupture” Detail • Alfred Stevens • 1867 • Oil on Canvas • 73x54cm
The features of her face also fade into shadow, further enhancing the emotion of wanting to hide from the world. The face is very softly painted without a single hard edge. The nose is almost nonexistent. The letter is the star of this painting. Her face only explains its significance.

Throwback Thursday - "Burst" - Patrick Saunders, Plein Air Easton

Here is one of Patrick Saunders Fine Arts's favorite plein air florals for #ThrowBackThursday. This was painted this during the 2017 Plein Air Easton Competition and Arts Festival

For a short time, there were two versions. Patrick leaned over the painting while reaching for some framing materials, and a perfect imprint was created on his t-shirt. Fortunately, the actual painting survived, but the t-shirt is no longer with us.

Throwback Thursday - The Sweet Potato in Kansas

For #ThrowbackThursday, an image of the Sweet Potato at our campsite in Kansas last May not long before we encountered multiple tornadoes on our way to Carmel, Indiana for a Patrick Saunders Fine Arts painting workshop.

We outran a couple of small tornadoes, then hunkered down with our fingers crossed in a campsite in Missouri as another larger tornado came close, but thankfully bypassed our campground. The winds bent and broke many trees, but the Sweet Potato made it through unscathed and water tight! We got very lucky on that trip, and we won't push our luck like that again.

Take Me Back Tuesday - The Sweet Potato in Oxford, Maryland

#TakeMeBackTuesday to our camping spot in Oxford, Maryland on the Tred Avon River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, for the 2018 Plein Air Easton Competition and Arts Festival, thanks to our fabulous housing hosts.

This was our Airstream 25FB Flying Cloud's (the Sweet Potato) first sunrise in this to die for spot. Patrick Saunders had to back in for almost half a city block to get her here. Towing like a boss.

Throwback Thursday - Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Airstream Life Magazine Cover

For #ThrowbackThursday, the Patrick Saunders Fine Arts painting of our Airstream Bambi Sport 16 on the fall 2017 cover of Airstream Life magazine.

Bambi was our first Airstream, and will always have a special place in our hearts. Her Official Airstream Registry name was the “Baked Potato.” We started calling her that after a fellow camper in San Antonio, Texas recognized us as the ones with the Airstream “so cute it looks like a baked potato.” We had a good laugh at that, and loved the name so much it stuck.

So, of course we named our current Airstream, a 25FB Flying Cloud, the “Sweet Potato.”

Throwback Thursday - Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Airstream Demonstration Painting - Alumapalooza 2017

For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s a great memory of an afternoon spent at the Airstream factory for Alumapalooza 2017, when Patrick Saunders Fine Arts did a free demonstration painting of a vintage Airstream trailer as part of his Laguna Plein Air Painters Association membership.

It was our first time at the factory in Jackson Center, Ohio, and it was great to meet so many fellow Airstreamers, and to see where all the riveted aluminum magic happens.

This video shows Patrick starting a painting of a gorgeous 1965 Safari Land Yacht that is the Kabine, a wonderful mobile "Tiny Shiny Shop" stationery store. We quickly fell in love with Americone Dream, the Kabine shop dog and greeter, and Patrick ended up gifting the unfinished demo to the Kabine’s lovely owner, Kim Hayes. (You can catch this dynamic duo in the background of the video.) Meri is truly the perfect dog, and we still covet her via her Instagram account, @twogirlsandatrailer.

The Kabine is so much more than a stationery store. It’s the perfect place to find a unique, truly special gift for someone you really care about, and you will be supporting a small business during this difficult time that is near and dear to many, many hearts. You can learn more about Kim and Meri and the Kabine at https://thekabine.com/

We look forward to the day when our paths cross again with Kim & Meri, and all of the other wonderful Airstreamers we’ve met on the road during our plein air streaming journey.

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts - "Swan Descending, A Staircase" - 2020 Olmsted Plein Air Invitational, Atlanta, Georgia

I just finished up my latest painting for the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational. Last year, I had the privilege of painting the dining room of the Swan House at the Atlanta History Center. This year, I chose to paint the grand staircase that greets visitors as they enter the mansion.

I was drawn to the scene not only because of the flowing lines of the staircase, but also the dueling sources of cool natural light from the windows and warm interior lights that create interesting contrasts throughout the room.

While the staircase dominates the room and the painting, there are so many textures and details that it was a very difficult balance to achieve. - Patrick Saunders

๐—ข๐— ๐—š ... I just watched your dog portrait video, and it was over the top ๐—™๐—”๐—•๐—จ๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—จ๐—ฆ!!! I learned so much and will rewatch many times in the next three months of the rental. You are just awesome and a great teacher!! I look forward to taking another “video workshop” or a face-to-face workshop from you soon!!! Thanks again for making the video!!! - ๐—ž๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ต๐˜† ๐—›.

Patrick - thank you so much for offering this video. It's so, so good. I rented it because I decided to take on a dog portrait (for a gift for daughter-in-law since I can't go shopping) and thought I needed a bit of guidance. And it did that in spades. The best part is the lessons are applicable to ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฌ๐—ง๐—›๐—œ๐—ก๐—š we paint. It's so well done too. Loved seeing every stroke, every decision so clearly and your narration was so helpful. Thanks again for doing these - a little silver lining in these crazy times! It was one of the best I’ve seen. Can’t wait for additional offerings. - ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—›.

Patrick, I just rented your video and think it's fantastic!! It is a wonderful refresher of all the things you demonstrated in your workshop. The three-month rental term is great and a wonderfully affordable value. I look forward to your future videos! Thanks! - ๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ.

I just finished watching it. It was such a great, succinct way of explaining all that is needed for a painting to be successful. At the same time, the way you paint, laying each brushstroke down (without blending) is fantastic! Also you handle edges differently, which is great. I think one of the most important things you do is not to make a line drawing! Your paintings are very expressive with beautiful brushwork. There are many other great things that I liked but won’t divulge. I don’t want to give away too much. This video is great for beginners and for intermediate to advanced! I believe it will definitely put one’s paintings to the next level if they follow your method of painting. I’m so glad that I have a workshop with you in September. It will help me try your method before then!

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Plein Air Painting - Muir Woods Cathedral, Marin County, California

We're already thinking about some of the places we'd like to travel to again when we are able.

The best way to experience Muir Woods National Monument is to be there as it opens, before the crowds swell, so you can experience the sun just beginning to break through the columns of the trees.

It's awe inspiring.

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts - Plein Air Painting Inspiration In Your Own Backyard

Not sure what to plein air paint while stuck at home? Sometimes there's great subject matter right in your own backyard.

I painted this on a rainy day in 2015 in the backyard of Craig Sole Designs in Overland Park, Kansas, for a local plein air event. The rusty old chairs seemed to be having a conversation between the two of them, but what really grabbed me was the cool reflection of the overcast sky in the wet patio stones. - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Plein Air Painting - Throwback Thursday

For #ThrowBackThursday, here is one of my all time favorite plein air memories.

Kimberly and I were in Jerome, Arizona, an awesome place. Built in 1899 and supported by copper mines, the town is now considered to be one of the most haunted spots in the U.S. There are historical sites and interesting structures everywhere. This charming house belonged to the owner of the town candy store, Rickeldoris Candy & Popcorn Company, and it caught my eye due to the rich color amongst a hill covered with older structures. This is another case where I didn't think I had the skill to paint such a complicated scene, and so of course, I decided to do it. If it scares you, paint it.

Kimberly shot a short video of me painting the scene that you can view here: https://bit.ly/Patrick_Saunders_Painting_Jerome

The painting went on to win Best of Show at the Sedona Arts Center's 2016 Sedona Plein Air Festival, and was featured in the 2018 June/July issue of Plein Air Magazine, as part of an article about my journey as a plein air painter. - Patrick Saunders

"Mangroves Dipping Their Toes In The Water" - 2020 Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival, Tequesta, Florida

A few weeks ago, I wrote about John Singer Sargent's painting "Portrait of Ralph Curtis on the Beach at Scheveningen" having sand particles embedded in its surface. Yesterday, a similar fate befell my own painting.

As I painted these mangroves at the Nature Conservancy Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island, Florida, I was sitting just five feet away from the water's edge, and I kept a close eye on the rising tide. What I didn't expect was the huge yacht that came speeding past me just yards away. The resulting wave came ten feet up the beach, sending my easel and the painting face down into the sand. Thankfully, it only adds to the authenticity, and sand is completely archival.  - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Plein Air Painting Workshop - Stokes County Arts Council, Westfield, North Carolina

Artist friends, my April plein air painting workshop sponsored by the Stokes County Arts Council in Westfield, North Carolina is almost full, so register now to secure your spot.

Click here to sign up: http://bit.ly/Patrick-Saunders-Workshop-Westfield

I’ve met a lot of artists in my workshops who are intimidated by outdoor painting because speed is required to capture changing light. I can help you overcome that fear, because my whole approach to painting lends itself to plein air, as it’s all about simplifying the subject and moving to finish rapidly in order keep energy and excitement in your work.

The way I paint, the way I will teach you to paint, will help you to meet the challenges inherent in painting plein air. - Patrick Saunders

Patrick Saunders Fine Arts Panama City Center for the Arts Painting Workshop - Group Photo

My thanks to Karen C. Williams for persevering and making my painting workshop happen in Panama City, Florida, which is still rebuilding after Hurricane Michael.

My thanks also to all of the artists in my class for working so hard, but also keeping it fun. I probably won't steal Karen's idea for dance breaks, because clearly I can't dance, but thanks all the same for a great moment.

Now remember, squint, squint, squint, and don't paint things, paint shapes. - Patrick Saunders
