Plein Air Easton

How great is this campsite? We had a gorgeous "mooch dock spot at Plein Air Easton this year, thanks to our fabulous housing hosts. We were camped right on the Tred Avon River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, in Oxford, Maryland. The photo below was the Sweet Potato's first sunrise in this to die for spot. Patrick Saunders had to back in for almost half a city block to get her here. The man tows like a boss.

The Sweet Potato enjoying her first sunrise in Oxford, Maryland.

The next morning we got up before dawn so that Patrick could be ready for the sunrise at the Tilghman Island Pre-Competition Paint Out. He was attracted to the reflection of the sun on the water even more than the boats this time, in a spot at the Knapp's Narrows Marina and Inn near where he painted last year for this event.

"Knapps Narrows Shine" (oil on linen, 14"x18") ended up winning the Tilghman Artists Choice Award Thursday night.

"Knapps Narrows Shine" (oil on linen, 14"x18" SOLD)

Thanks to our housing hosts this year, we had not one, not two, but THREE orange tabby cats to play with during our stay. Orange tabbies are just the best. As soon as we met them, we knew we were going to photograph and paint at least one of them as a gift for our hosts. Cody is shy with strangers. Wyatt likes to play outside in his bed of catnip, but could not be enticed to pose for us even for a moment. We did manage to catch Benton lounging in a screened outdoor porch. The dappled light on the tile floor in front of him, and on his back, with his face in partial shadow, was gorgeous, and I caught a decent photo of him, although the camera spooked him a bit. Patrick painted this portrait of Benton Friday afternoon. We love photographing and painting pets, and would be happy to do nothing but that. Someday.

"Benton" (oil on linen, 9"x12")

Patrick headed to Cambridge Saturday morning and started a large painting of the Choptank River Lighthouse. He had painted this lighthouse during his first year at Plein Air Easton in 2016, and it's been stuck in his mind ever since, so he decided to revisit it because he was so drawn to the sparkle of the boats and the lighthouse, and to the strong foreground element of the dock. Patrick wasn't able to finish this painting on Saturday, and went back Monday morning to finish it.

Our thanks to 2018 judge Jill Carver for giving "Back on the Choptank" the Best Marine Painting Award at Plein Air Easton this year.

"Back on the Choptank" (oil on linen, 24"x30")

Saturday night was the Meet the Artists Party at the Kirby's Wharf Farm near Trapper. Patrick spent a nice afternoon there painting in the shade of these beautiful trees, with a cool breeze coming off the water of the Choptank River. He tried to find out what kind of trees these are, but no one seemed to know. Wish we could identify these beauties.

"Along the Choptank" (oil on linen, 16"x20").
On Sunday, Paint Oxford Day, Patrick headed to the Hinckley Yacht Services marina to paint a beautiful one of a kind custom sailboat docked there that was built in 1979.

"Wind Song" (oil on linen, 14"x18").

Patrick started this boatyard painting Monday afternoon, and returned Tuesday afternoon to finish it. We had stumbled across this scene at Campbell's Boatyard at Jack's Point earlier one evening on a walk through Oxford. Patrick liked the simplicity of this silhouetted composition, so he returned to paint it.

"Fire Water, Jack's Point" (oil on linen, 18"x24")

Wednesday, Patrick painted this Oxford home, a structure Kimberly was drawn to on a bike ride around the town. The dappled light that moves across this historic looking brick townhouse, from sunrise to sunset, just adds to its charm.

"Van Winkle House" (oil on linen, 6"x8").

Patrick painted this street scene Thursday night at the Plein Air Easton Nocturne Block Party. This is only Patrick's fourth ever nocturne.

"Night at Dover & Harrison" (oil on linen, 12"x16")

Patrick called his painting Saturday for Plein Air Easton's Quick Draw Competition "45 Minutes in Rain" (oil on linen, 12"x16"), for obvious reasons.

We really enjoyed our busy but at the same time tranquil stay in Oxford this year. This was the Sweet Potato's first trip to the Delmarva Peninsula, and she looks good on the water here, if we do say so ourselves. - Kimberly

Plein Air Streaming - Camping on the Tred Avon River

How lucky are we this week?

We're camped right on the Tred Avon River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, in Oxford, Maryland, for the 2018 Plein Air Easton, thanks to our fabulous housing hosts.

This was the Sweet Potato's first sunrise in this to die for spot. Patrick Saunders had to back in for almost half a city block to get her here. Towing like a boss.

Plein Air Richmond 2018

We arrived early for Plein Air Richmond this year so that Patrick Saunders could teach a plein air workshop at Maymont Gardens sponsored by the Brazier Gallery. The class sold out, and we had a great time with this wonderful group of artists, some of whom didn't make it into the photo. Our thanks to Sarah of the Brazier gallery for all of her hard work in organizing the workshop, and to Maymont for letting Patrick teach there.

Patrick's first painting this year was done at the historic Hollywood Cemetery, where he painted President John Tyler's view, so to speak, from his resting place on a hill overlooking the James River. Patrick liked the way the sunlight filtered through the trees and struck this beautiful wrought iron gate, creating a strong vertical shadow pattern.

"President Tyler's Eternal View (oil on linen, 16"x20")

Heavy rainstorms hit Richmond for much of the rest of the week, so Patrick decided to focus on interiors for a change. He started with a painting of a space designed by the very talented creatives who are our housing hosts. Patrick was drawn to the way warm and cool light spills into this room from multiple windows. "A Welcoming Table" received an Honorable Mention award from judge Duane Keiser at Plein Air Richmond.

"A Welcoming Table" (oil on linen, 18"x24") SOLD

We got a brief break in the rain Wednesday morning, so we headed to the Pony Pasture Rapids, where Patrick painted this view of the James River.

"Life on the James" (oil on linen, 14"x18")

The rains returned Wednesday afternoon, so Patrick moved back indoors to the historic Jefferson Hotel, where he painted this scene in the lobby. The lobby itself is overwhelming because it's a large space, but Patrick found an intimate scene in a quiet corner that he decided to capture.

"Lounge at the Jefferson" (oil on linen, 16"x20")

On Saturday, Patrick won First Place at Plein Air Richmond's Fast & Fresh quick paint for his painting of the Can Can Brasserie. Our thanks to prize sponsor Jim Bell of BCG Companies.

"Can Can Can" (oil on linen, 12"x16") SOLD

This marks the third year in a row that Patrick has participated in Plein Air Richmond, and it has been a great experience for him every time. We have come to love Richmond, and our housing hosts, who have become friends. We are also grateful to Lauren Brazier for her excellent plein air event that benefits a very worthy cause, the Richmond SPCA.

May 2018 Gateway International Painting Competition

Thank you to judge Susan Faust for choosing Patrick Saunders' painting "Sunrise Through Kaua'ula" (oil on linen, 14"x18") as a finalist in the May 2018 Gateway International Painting Competition.

Susan's comments: "This is a lovely, confident piece that is such a great example of a unified palette. It has such a great feeling of a moment in time. I love the transparency of the stains and the small brush strokes of more opaque paint. This is a direct and strong painting with a beautiful, luminous feeling."

Patrick Saunders Plein Air Richmond Workshop

I had the pleasure of teaching a sold out plein air workshop right before participating in Plein Air Richmond this year. It was a great two days at Maymont Gardens with a fantastic group of artists.

There is nothing more satisfying than that moment when a new concept clicks with an artist in my class, and it opens up all kinds of possibilities in painting. I saw it happen with every person in this workshop. - Patrick

Plein Air Southwest 2018

I painted my third ever nocturne at Plein Air Southwest this year. I had PRK eye surgery in 2007, and don't see as well at night since then, so I've been hesitant ever since to try my hand at nocturnes, but after getting a Mighty Bright orchestra light, I decided to take another swing at night painting. I talk a lot in my workshops about painting what scares you, and nocturnes definitely scare me.

I saw this shrimp boat while scouting scenes just before the festival started. It made me nervous just thinking about painting it, so I decided to come back the first night of the event to give it a shot.

"Ready For Dawn" (oil on panel, 16"x20")

I came down with the flu the following day, and didn't feel up to painting much after this, but on the last day of the event I went to Fulton Harbor and painted shrimp boats. What drew me to them was the way the net riggings were blown out with warm colors in the sunlight, so that they didn't becoming too overwhelming against the light sky.

"Shrimpers At Fulton" (oil on linen, 14"x18")

My quick paint on Saturday morning.

"Boats and House Boats" (oil on linen, 12"x16)

I was thrilled when my nocturne won a Plein Air Magazine Award of Excellence at Plein Air Southwest. My thanks to judge Joshua Been, and to the Outdoor Painters Society and the Rockport Center for the Arts for a great event. Congratulations to all of the winning artists. - Patrick

Judging Plein Air KC 2018 - Awards Ceremony

Patrick Saunders was the judge for Plein Air KC this year, in addition to teaching a plein air workshop for the festival.

Here's a video of Patrick explaining his selections at the event awards ceremony at Buttonwood Art Space. Congratulations to all of the artists who came out to paint at this great event.

During Plein Air KC, Kirk Peterson of the Penn Valley Park Conservancy asked Patrick to paint a new park piece for a June 1st First Friday exhibition at Buttonwood, the proceeds of which will benefit the conservancy. Patrick painted this just before the festival's last quick draw at Union Cemetery.

"Rising & Falling, Union Cemetery" (oil on linen, 14"x18")

Patrick also contributed several of his older plein air paintings of Penn Valley Park from previous Plein Air KC events for display and sale at Buttonwood on First Friday.

Patrick Saunders Plein Air KC Workshop

Patrick Saunders taught a two-day plein air workshop at Plein Air KC Art Festival this year, in addition to being the event judge.

The weather had been stormy just before Patrick's workshop was due to start, but we got lucky and had great weather both days. It was a pleasure to spend time again in Penn Valley Park, and nostalgic too. We used to come to this park every morning when we lived in Union Hill to take our dogs to the dog park, and to walk with them on the paths around the Pioneer Mother Memorial. On the first day of the workshop, Patrick once again painted what we used to call Barney's tree, because our dog Barney marked that tree every chance he got. We're not sure why he singled it out given how many trees there are in the park, but for some reason, that tree, and that tree alone, was the one he treated like a dog message board. We lost Barney and his sister Betty before we hit the road, so spending time at Penn Valley Park is almost like being with them again.

Our thanks to everyone who signed up for Patrick's workshop. He really enjoyed painting with all of you.

2018 Airstream Fine Art Invitational - Alumapalooza 9

If you're in the Ohio area, the 2018 Airstream Fine Art Invitational show reception at Riverside Art Center is May 30th from 6 -8 p.m.

Patrick Saunders' painting of our Sweet Potato is in this show, but unfortunately we can't make it to Alumapalooza 9 this year because we'll be at Plein Air Southwest.

Go see this great show of Airstream art if you can.

Patrick also sent this mini painting of our old Airstream Bambi Sport 16 to the Airstream factory in Jackson Center, Ohio, this week to be auctioned off at Alumapalooza to benefit the local Fish Pond Food Pantry.

Patrick Saunders Augusta Plein Air Art Festival Workshop II

Patrick's second one-day plein air painting workshop for the Augusta Plein Air Art Festival was held at Honey Bee Vineyards in Augusta, Missouri. We envy the owners of this gorgeous property. It's the kind of place that if you lived there, you'd never want to leave home. Patrick and all of the artists who came for the workshop had a hard time deciding what to paint because there was just so much great subject matter to choose from here.

A wine cellar that dates to the 19th Century.

Patrick Saunders starting his workshop.

Two artists brought their dogs to the workshop, and the vineyard owners had an adorable English Bulldog named Chester, so the class turned into a bit of a dog party as well.

Ringo was so sweet that we wanted to take him home with us.

Who could resist this face?

Chester is the official greeter at Honey Bee Vineyards. He actually waves hello on command.

The morning started a bit windy and chilly, but quickly warmed up to be another wonderful spring day. Our thanks to all of the artists who came out to paint with Patrick, and a huge thank you to Paul and Melissa Hughes, who were fantastic hosts. They not only made lunch for the workshop participants, they also treated everyone to a wine tasting. A little wine and some plein air painting makes for an absolutely perfect day.
