Augusta Plein Air Art Festival Workshop II

Patrick's second one-day plein air painting workshop for the Augusta Plein Air Art Festival was held at Honey Bee Vineyards in Augusta, Missouri. We envy the owners of this gorgeous property. It's the kind of place that if you lived there, you'd never want to leave home. Patrick and all of the artists who came for the workshop had a hard time deciding what to paint because there was just so much great subject matter to choose from here.

Two artists brought their dogs to the workshop, and the vineyard owners had an adorable English Bulldog named Chester, so the class turned into a bit of a dog party as well.

Ringo was so sweet that we wanted to take him home with us.

Who could resist this face?

Chester is the official greeter at Honey Bee Vineyards. He actually waves hello on command.

The morning started a bit windy and chilly, but quickly warmed up to be another wonderful spring day. Our thanks to all of the artists who came out to paint with Patrick, and a huge thank you to Paul and Melissa Hughes, who were fantastic hosts. They not only made lunch for the workshop participants, they also treated everyone to a wine tasting. A little wine and some plein air painting makes for an absolutely perfect day.

Augusta Plein Air Art Festival Workshop I

Patrick taught two one-day plein air painting workshops this year at the Augusta Plein Air Art Festival in Augusta, Missouri.

The first workshop was in Femme Osage, Missouri, at the Femme Osage Haus, a charming bed and breakfast. Femme Osage is Patrick's favorite place to paint in the entire area. It has a tranquil, historic beauty.

Our thanks to all of the great artists who came out to paint with Patrick, and our thanks to Mary, the owner of Femme Osage Haus. She was such a gracious host and made a wonderful lunch for the participants. What's better than painting en plein air on a gorgeous spring day?

5th Annual Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival

Patrick was pleased to be a juried artist again this year at the Lighthouse ArtCenter's 5th Annual Plein Air Festival in Jupiter, Florida.

Patrick's one hour painting, "Big Boats, Little Boat" (oil on linen, 9"x12"), was completed at Flagler Park for the opening quick paint at the festival.

We visited Blowing Rocks, Florida, and found the walk to the beach as beautiful as the beach itself, so Patrick painted the trail.

Patrick Saunders' "Towards the Beach, Blowing Rocks" (oil on linen, 16"x20") SOLD

Patrick decided the jumble of palm trees, palmettos and vines at Riverbend Park in Jupiter called for an almost abstract painting.

Patrick Saunders' "Jungle Sharp" (oil on linen, 12"x12") SOLD

We arrived at Riviera Beach Marina Village before dawn to catch the light just as it began to illuminate the moored boats.

Patrick Saunders' "First Spark" (oil on linen, 14"x18").

Patrick painted this banyan tree in Zeus Park in Hobe Sound, Florida, while neighborhood residents recounted their stories and memories of this tree. Our thanks to festival judge Nancy Tankersley for awarding this painting 2nd Place at the festival. Patrick was really drawn to the root system of this tree, a testament to its history and endurance. Our thanks also to all of the festival organizers and volunteers, and congratulations to all of the artists who won awards and honorable mentions.

2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational

Patrick Saunders was invited to the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational this year, and we were especially excited about this event, because neither of us had been to Hawaii yet.

We didn't have time to visit the other islands, but we can speak for Maui - it's stunning. We flew in a few days early because, since we will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary in October of 2018, we decided to use this opportunity to start celebrating that milestone a bit early, with a few days to ourselves in Maiu before the event started.

We spent our first full day in Maui driving the Hana Highway. If you get the chance, drive the entire island if you can - it's the best way to really experience Maui. This giant banyan tree is just one of many amazing things to see on the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakalā National Park, just one great stop along the Hana Highway. We hiked the trail to see this tree, an incredible bamboo forest, and the Waimoku Falls, a 400-foot waterfall. More awe inspiring experiences that we will never forget.

Happy early 20th wedding anniversary to us! Waimoku Falls in the background.

Patrick Saunders did his first painting for the invitational at Lahaina Harbor for the event's Kick-Off Paint Out & Art Sale.

Patrick drew quite a crowd while painting at the harbor.

Patrick was able to catch some sunshine for this painting at D.T. Fleming Beach Park before an afternoon storm rolled into Lahaina.

Patrick painted a beach scene the next morning at the Makena State Park Big Beach. It was stormy the day before, but this day was perfect for painting, lounging on the beach, more painting, wading in the ocean, and painting again.

We were greeted by roosters, hens and chicks as we made our way along the Honolua Bay Trail, an extraordinary primordial forest trail that leads you to Honolua Bay, a popular place for snorkeling. Some of the chickens made their way into Patrick's painting of a eucalyptus tree on this trail.

Midway through the invitational, competition artists were invited to Montage Kapalua Bay Resort to paint a portrait of a Hawaiian model.

Our thanks - mahalo - to the Makana Aloha Foundation for giving Patrick Saunders' painting "The Path to Honolua Bay" their annual award at the 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational, and for purchasing the painting.

Also, our thanks to everyone who attended the invitational's Art to Heart Gala for voting to award this same painting with the Collector's Choice Award as well.

We are so grateful that we had a chance to explore Maui. For more photos of the Hana Highway, Honolua Bay Trail, and an incredible sunset, check out our Saunders Fine Arts blog post about this fantastic trip.
