Plein Air Texas 2018

Patrick Saunders was honored to be invited back to Plein Air Texas again this year. It marked his fourth year of participation in this great event.

Posted here are all of his paintings this year, with the exception of his pre-paint and quick draw pieces, both of which sold before we could get good photos of them.

Our thanks to all of the 2018 Plein Air Texas competition artists for giving Patrick the Texas Artists Camp Award. This award is determined by votes from all of the juried artists. Awards are always appreciated, and they are extra special when they come from your peers. Thanks also to Joe and Nancy Heartsill for inviting all of the competition artists to paint at their beautiful Door Key Ranch that day. The views were spectacular!

"Sticks & Stones" (oil on linen, 12"x16")
Patrick had a little fun with the title of his next ranch painting. Many thanks to Nolan Venable for allowing juried artists to paint again this year at his stunning ranch. Included are some photos Kimberly at Saunders Fine Arts took last year of this incredible property. You can see that it's difficult just to decide what to paint when you are surrounded by so much natural beauty.

Patrick learned something about donkeys, or at least one donkey, at Plein Air Texas this year. How do you get a donkey to pose while you paint? Bananas. Give her one, and she's good for twenty minutes.  Give her another, and she's back for more.

"Mosey" (oil on linen, 18"x24" SOLD)
Sometimes the kitchen is the most inviting place in the house. That's definitely the case with this one in Christoval, Texas. It's the kind of space where you want to hang out with friends, and Patrick did just that when he painted it.

"Heart of a Home" (oil on linen, 18"x24" SOLD)

As Patrick sat down to paint a herd of cows at the Mims Ranch just outside of San Angelo, Texas, one cow emerged from the group. She didn't seem too happy that he was there. She repeatedly stamped her feet and snorted at him. This painting was cut short at about 20 minutes, because when she couldn't scare Patrick off, she finally walked away.

"You Lookin' At Me?" (oil on linen, 5"x7")

Our thanks as always to everyone at Plein Air Texas for such a wonderful event, and for their incomparable hospitality.

Family Portrait Commission

Patrick Saunders' biggest portrait commission yet, quite literally.

He better hope for some good weather the next few weeks, because he won't be working on this in the Sweet Potato.

Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational 2018

I was honored to be asked back this year for the second time to the Laguna Beach, California Plein Air Painting Invitational

LPAPA's 20th Anniversary invitational started with a quick draw competition at gorgeous Heisler Park. My painting was the first to go at the art sale afterwards.

"Tall Against The Surf" (oil on linen, 9"x12" SOLD)

I decided to challenge myself a bit by doing something different at this event. I rarely do big vistas, and I struggle with low light painting because of eye surgery, but I just couldn't pass up the view of Dana Point Harbor. Here's a photo Kimberly at Saunders Fine Arts took of me working on this painting, and another one she took earlier, just before sunrise. Such an amazing place to spend a morning, whether you are painting or not. Thank you Dana Point for the beautiful memories.

My harbor painting ended up winning both the Strada Easel & Revelite awards at the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association's 20th Annual Collectors Gala at Festival of Arts/Pageant of the Masters.

"Morning Spills Into The Cove" (oil on linen, 18"x24" SOLD)

I also painted my fifth ever nocturne of Tuvalu Home Laguna Beach at the LPAPA Nocturne Paint Out

I used an ArtEscape Compact Lighting System designed by Douglas Woodman for the first time while painting this piece, and I liked it so much I immediately bought one. With the ArtEscape, you can choose between warm and cool light, or a mix of both, allowing you to better control the light on your painting, and see its colors. My thanks to Doug for making a great light system, and for letting me try it. PRK eye surgery years ago left me unable to see very well at night, but this light makes it possible for me to not only paint nocturnes, but finally actually start really enjoying painting nocturnes. That's a breakthrough for me, and I'm looking forward now to trying my hand at much more night painting in the future.

You can learn more about the ArtEscape here:
http://www.artescape.us/index.php

I painted a daylight scene of Nyes Place in Laguna Beach for the 2017 LPAPA Invitational, and I've been wondering all year how this scene might look as a nocturne due to all of the windows stacked atop each other. Armed with the ArtEscape light, I felt ready to tackle it, but it ended up being a very a quick one, only about an hour and a half, as I was afraid one of the many passing cars that stopped for a look at my painting might cause a traffic accident.

I find the trees in Southern California endlessly fascinating.

At Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, there is a nice variety of trees. It's not just the textures and shapes of the trees themselves, but their shadows and light effects on the environment around them. With this painting, I set out to capture the late afternoon sun blasting through the lace-like patterns created by these interwoven limbs and leaves.

This painting and "Nyes Night" are now available for sale at Eva Reynolds Fine Art Gallery.

I really enjoyed this event, and was very happy just to have been invited back. The chance to paint in beautiful Laguna Beach at the most prestigious invitational in the country is never a hard decision to make.  - Patrick Saunders

Plein Air Painting - The Sun Breaks On Point Reyes

For #throwbackthursday, a Patrick Saunders Fine Arts piece painted three years ago this month for the 2015 Sonoma Plein Air Art Festival.

If you've ever been to the Point Reyes Lighthouse in California, you know it's a bit of a hike in and out in order to make a painting like this, but Patrick found this landmark well worth the effort.

We first visited Point Reyes National Seashore in 2012 when we lived in San Francisco, California. The fog was so heavy on that particular day that you couldn't even see the ocean, you could only hear waves crashing below, but it only added to the beauty of the place and the experience.
